Session description

The 3rd edition of The Brewers Forum is opened by our President Lasse Aho. You’ll hear how the brewing sector shapes up on both sides of the Atlantic, with Secretary-General of The Brewers of Europe Pierre-Olivier Bergeron and CEO/President of the Brewers Association Bob Pease, giving context of how beer has fared in the midst of the pandemic, the economic and regulatory challenges the sector will face in the next few years. The session concludes with a keynote address by M. Atsushi Katsuki-san, President and CEO of Asahi Group, who will share his vision of how a Japan-based global company anticipates the future.

NAME: LASSE AHO

TITLE: PRESIDENT, THE BREWERS OF EUROPE AND CEO Olvi Oyj plc (Finland)

BIOGRAPHY: A Finnish citizen, Mr Aho has been since 2004 the CEO of Olvi Oyj plc, a successful middle size regional brewery. Mr Aho holds a master’s degree in social sciences from the University of Tampere. A Board member of The Brewers of Europe since December 2014, Mr Aho also previously served as Vice President representing small and medium-sized breweries and has been elected President of The Brewers of Europe in September 2020.

NAME: PIERRE-OLIVIER BERGERON

TITLE: SECRETARY-GENERAL, THE BREWERS OF EUROPE

BIOGRAPHY: Appointed Secretary General of The Brewers of Europe in 2010, Pierre-Olivier Bergeron previously served the European Commission as Technical Advisor for the setting up of business information services in Central and Eastern Europe, the College of Europe as Communications Director, the European Wine Committee as Deputy Secretary General and The Brewers of Europe in several capacities. Pierre-Olivier holds distinctions from the brewing community in Belgium, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

TITLE OF THE PRESENTATION: Respond. Recover. Reconnect: Europe’s brewing landscape in 2021

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION: The COVID crisis has put unprecedented pressure on the business model of many brewers and on the whole business of many bars and restaurants. The Brewers of Europe’s focus is to ensure the political, regulatory and financial support is there so that as many of these hospitality establishments as possible are still there to reopen in an viable manner once the virus has come under control. Environmental sustainability is also on top of The Brewers of Europe’s agenda: there is an opportunity for the brewing sector to drive the Green Recovery collaboratively.

NAME: BOB PEASE

TITLE: CEO and PRESIDENT, BREWERS ASSOCIATION

BIOGRAPHY: Bob Pease is the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Brewers Association. The Brewers Association is the trade association representing small and independent American Craft Brewers with over 5,300 brewery members.

Pease was name President and CEO in 2014 after five years as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Prior to that Pease served as Vice President. In addition to managing the Senior Management Team and day-to-day operations of the association, he has led the charge to raise the awareness of small and independent brewers in Washington, DC. His work has established the Brewers Association as the voice of small and independent brewers on Capitol Hill.  In 2020, after a 12-year effort, Pease saw the culmination of his efforts with the passing of the Craft Beverage Modernization & Tax Reform Act in the year-end COVID-19 relief package. This legislation effectively cut the Federal Excise Tax rates for small brewers in half.

Pease has a degree in Political Science from the University of Colorado. He is a member of American Society of Association Executives, a graduate of the Siebel Institute Professional Beer Tasting and Styles course and is a certified TIPS trainer. In 2015 and 2020 Pease was named, “Beer Industry Person of the Year” by Brewbound and in 2018, 2019, and 2020 Pease was named one of the top lobbyists in Washington, D.C. by The Hill.com.

He lives in Boulder, CO with his wife Peggy, daughter Kyra and dog Juno. He enjoys spending time with his family, reading, skiing, cycling, golf and beer drinking in his spare time.

NAME: Atsushi Katsuki-san

TITLE:  President and CEO, Asahi Global

BIOGRAPHY: Atsushi Katsuki is the President and CEO of Asahi Group Holdings. Before this position, Mr. Katsuki served as CFO Asahi Group Holdings, Senior Managing Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and CFO of the Japan Regional Headquarters, Group CEO of Asahi Holdings in Australia and General Manager of the Company. Atsushi Katsuki has a wealth of global experience where he has also showed his capabilities in spearheading the building of the Asahi’s global business platform with three core pillars in Japan, Europe, and Australia.
