Walsh, Derek

Derek immigrated to the Netherlands from Canada in 1983 and started homebrewing in 1984. He won the national homebrew competition twice and then became a BJCP & BKG judge in 1986. He met Michael Jackson in 1987 and they collaborated on The Beer Hunter and many of his books. Derek co-founded Europe’s 1st gypsy brewery SNAB in 1991. He founded BIER+ consulting and published his “Biertypen Gids” in 2002. He writes technical articles for beer publications, assisted on “The Oxford Companion to Beer” and currently writes beer-style articles for BROUW! magazine. Derek develops/troubleshoots commercial recipes, trains Beer Sommeliers and brewers for StiBON, hosts/judges beer & food events and organizes beer competitions. This has taken him to Britain, Canada, Ireland, America, Germany, New Zealand, Italy, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil and The Netherlands. He was promoted to BJCP Master Judge level and graduated Cum Laude from the Doemens International Beer Sommelier course in 2019.
