Inspired by a work experience at Privatbrauerei Moritz Fiege in Bochum, a middle-sized brewery in Ruhr region, Florian Schrickel studied Beverage Technology at Hochschule Geisenheim University and Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, both Germany. During his masters, he spent a semester abroad at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, to study Viticulture and Oenology. Mr. Schrickel was awarded his master degree by submitting a master thesis on the re-utilisation of spent hops from dry hopping as a source of α-acids – assisting in a VLB research project.
Subsequently, in 2018 he started his job at VLB as research associate. Within the Research Institute for Beer and Beverage Production (FIBGP) Mr. Schrickel is engaged as a scientist for brewing-technology and assists the team in training and education.
His responsibilities cover:
The evaluation of new fields of research and project partner acquisition
The design and management of research projects, covering raw material-, brew house-, yeast- and sustainability-related topics
Lectures in brewmaster training programmes in German and English language, focussing on hops, hop products and dry hopping
Consulting services in breweries, dealing with microbiological and chemical-technical quality issues as well as the analysis of saving potentials
Moreover, Mr. Schrickel works on costumer projects dealing with dry hopping efficiency and consistency.
